He descended in a smooth glide
On a current of cool river air,
Landed on the mossy crest of a piling
And gazed into my eyes,
As if he knew what I was thinking,
What I was feeling.

At first, I thought, how agile he was
A seagull standing on one foot,
Perfectly balanced
Tiny foot tucked beneath his white tail feathers.

He cawed raucously,
I got the message and
Tossed him a handful of stale popcorn
From a plastic bag in my pocket.
He lunged for it
Caught it in mid-air
Swallowed without chewing
And began to squawk for more.

It was then I noticed,
When he returned to his piling,
He had only one leg.

His balancing act was not an act at all,
It was his only choice.

Before thinking, I asked,
“So, fellow, what happened to you?”
His answer was a knowing gaze
As if he wanted to tell me
But didn't think it was as important
As begging for popcorn.

I was embarrassed by his acceptance
Ashamed to look into his wise onyx eyes
I left the popcorn lying on the pier
Reached for my cushion,
Took my self-pity and limped away.
