Western Millennial Men Are Ditching ‘Masculine’ Values
Millennial Men May Be More Selfless Than Older Generations
What it means to be a man today
The study participants felt that helping others was a key element of masculinity, with 91 per cent of them saying it's important to lend a helping hand whenever possible. Additionally, 80 per cent believed guys should participate in community service projects; as one teen participant explained, "A man is really kind and generous to everyone.”

The study was conducted through interviews with small groups of men, and the conversations highlighted how younger generations feel they have more freedom to be sensitive.
“I think nowadays, being a man, you can be more emotional," one 22-year-old participant explained. "Growing up, guys that cried or boys that cried were made fun of. But now there’s more acknowledgment that having emotion isn’t so bad... and people who are in touch with their emotions typically make better decisions."
The most surprising revelation, according to Oliffe, is that men today are more health conscious than before.
“The rhetoric for the longest time [was] that men don’t go to the doctor,” he told Men's Health (He's got a point.)
This doesn't mean guys don’t value more traditional male attributes: 75 per cent said that men need to be physically strong. However, that fared lower than intellectual prowess, which 87 per cent of dudes rank as an invaluable trait for all males.
Are today's men drastically different than their fathers
Oliffe explained that the study did not compare the 15-to-29-year-olds to Generation X and Baby Boomers, so he can't conclude scientifically that certain generations are different from others. It's possible that the traits named by the study participants are the same ones older guys might have valued — just packaged a different way.
“It was probably talked about in terms of chivalry,” he said. “It may be that we’re talking about the same kinds of things, but the language and packaging is different.”
Or, it could just be that today's guys are more free to speak their minds.
"What it shows is that those guys are willing to articulate these values, whereas previous generations may not have been able to," he said.
