Rainy's foam popper heads are excellent for making poppers for big, aggressive fish like bluefish, striped bass, dolphin, barracuda, tarpon, snook, jacks, largemouth bass, and even false albacore and small tunas. Pencil Popper heads are long and thin for ease of casting and a slim profile. Any of these foam heads can be used to make a popper, or reversed to make a slider style of fly. Tie one up, tie it on, then hold on!

Please note: we list all of these popper heads with the manufacturer's designations, but just because a popper is labelled as #1/0, #2/0, etc., does not guarantee that they will fit perfectly on a given hook style or size. Please read the descriptions carefully as we have listed the exact measurements for all of the popper heads shown below - for a good fit, the length of the popper should be similar to the shank length of the hook that you plan to use. Any of these foam popper heads can easily be trimmed to length with a sharp blade for a custom fit on the hook style of your choice. Where possible, we have made a few suggestions for possible hook/popper head match-ups. Please be aware the these popper heads are typically formed by hand by the folks who make them, so some small variations in size/shape are possible.

We offer some good hooks for poppers on of our fly tying materials catalog, including traditional kinked-shank style popper hooks like the Mustad CK74S and the Umpqua U505. Other useful long-shank hook styles for poppers are the and the Gamakatsu "Spinnerbait" hook, as well as the. For really big poppers, try the Owner Longshanks.

howitzer foam popper heads

Howitzer Popper Heads

Howitzer Popper Heads are next-generation soft foam popper heads that provide new options for tying baitfish poppers. The Howitzer imitates the head of a small minnow (or baitfish) that is splashing and sipping at the surface of the water. It's designed with a deep recess at the back of the head so that an articulated body and tail of a minnow can be embedded seamlessly into the back of the head. As a result, the body of the minnow hangs down in the water (roughly at a 45-degree angle) and moves enticingly in a position that can be seen by predatory fish from a long distance and offers them an irresistible profile and an easy opportunity for a meal! The Large size heads are approximately 1 inch long and 1 inch wide (1 inch is about 25mm); the Medium are about 3/4 inch long and 3/4 inch wide (20mm). The eye holes on the large size will accept the 9/32" eye (8.5mm); the Medium accepts about a 7/32" eye (6mm).

The bathroom is finished! Woohoo! I’m so excited to be done!  I now have two whole rooms that are completely finished in my house.  😀  And they just happen to be the two most challenging — a total gut and remodel of a kitchen and a bathroom.  The rest of the rooms should feel like a walk in the park after these!

I started this remodel on January 22nd — almost exactly six months ago — and have been working on it off and on since then. I took a break during my father-in-law’s two-week visit in March, another break during my two-week blogging break, and yet another break while I finished up the condo. So if I had to guess, I’d say it took an actual three-and-a-half months of work. But IT IS DONE!!

DIY bathroom remodel with tile floor, stained wood slat ceiling, DIY vanity, recessed panel walls, and bifold closet doors used as double doors

And since I regularly have people ask me, “Do you actually do all of the work yourself?” I need to give credit where credit is due. 🙂 I do have a plumber who I hire to do all of my plumbing for me. (Yes, I’m sure I could do plumbing, but I just don’t want to. 🙂 ) My brother-in-law helped me wire the new lighting and outlets. My neighbor and his son and friend helped me remove the old cast iron bathtub, and I also payed them to haul away the 39 heavy bags full of old broken tile and mortar, as well as some other construction debris.

MY LATEST VIDEOS

Everything else I did by myself, from breaking out the old tile and mortar and bagging it up, laying new subfloor and concrete board, installing the concrete board around the bathtub, installing new drywall (even on the ceiling!), installing all of the tile on the floor and bathtub surround, building and installing the new vanity, building the built-in storage area, and on, and on. So I would guesstimate that I did at least 95% of this remodel by myself.

Anyway, let’s get on to some pictures, shall we? 🙂 When we bought the house, the bathroom was not only very dated, but it was also incredibly inefficient, with a huge storage cabinet above the tub that was pretty much inaccessible to me, a tiny sink and vanity, and a vanity light with a pull chain. The only outlet in the room was the one on the vanity light, and I couldn’t even reach it, so I basically had a bathroom with no usable outlets.  There was also an unneeded window. It was originally an exterior window, but now it looked into the sunroom, which will eventually be a hallway once we do our big remodel back there, so I decided to remove it.

Outdated original bathroom from the late 1940s / early 1950s with mosaic tile floor and tiled walls and tub.

I gutted everything, right down to the floor joists, studs, and ceiling joists, and then rebuilt the bathroom.  It looks absolutely nothing like it did before.

Remodeled bathroom - from 1940's tiled bathroom to updated room with recessed panel walls and wood slat ceiling

That’s a pretty drastic change, right?!  😀  Here’s a side-by-side view of the before and after…

Bathroom remodel - before and after - 1940s original bathroom before, and updated modern bathroom after

As I mentioned, the old vanity was tiny, and the only outlet was on that vanity light.  All of the cream and maroon tile made the bathroom feel a bit dreary and depressing to me, and that mirror was way too high to actually be usable to me.  (I’m only five feet tall, and that thing was high!)

Outdated bathroom from late 1940s / early 1950s with mosaic tile floor and tiled walls

But now I have a much bigger vanity, with usable counterspace, lots of storage, actual usable outlets, and a mirror that I can actually use and see more than just my face from the chin up.  😀

DIY bathroom remodel with vanity made from stock oak cabinets and bifold closet doors used as double doors

FYI, the floor in the hallway is looking a bit rough now, where I installed the threshold, filled in the missing boards after moving the door, and after dragging 39 bags of debris through there.  I’ll repair all of that, including that one transition threshold board, when I work on the hallway.  So just ignore that and only look at the tile.  😉

bathroom remodel before and after - early 1940s / late 1950s original bathroom

It’s hard for me to imagine now that the bathroom ever looked like that, but it’s even harder to imagine that it looked like this at one point.

removing tile and thick mortar bed from tub surround and walls in a late 1940s / early 1950s bathroom

original 1940s cast iron bathtub removed - nest and leaves underneath, and damaged / old / rotted subfloor

But the hardest thing to believe is that I don’t think I ever shed any tears from being overwhelmed by the process or the condition of my bathroom at any point during this remodel.  Now temper tantrums on the other hand…there were definitely a few of those, like when I was installing the concrete board around the tub by myself, and I was trying to install the middle full piece on the long wall, requiring me to lift it up over my shoulders, and just as I almost had it in place, the top started to tilt towards me and it landed on my head.  Yes…temper tantrum, not so lady-like language…you name it.  But I don’t remember ever just having a good ole sob party from being overwhelmed.  Even when most of the subfloor was removed, and I could just see straight through to the dirt below, I was fairly confident that I could get it done.  Not completely confident, but fairly confident.  😀

Anyway, moving on…

I out of three stock unfinished oak cabinets from Home Depot, by attaching them together with wood glue and screws, and then adding decorative feet. is made out of pine 2″ x 3″ lumber, and was really simple to make. I trimmed it out just like I trim out my doors.  I made the shelves completely from scraps of MDF and trim.

DIY remodeled bathroom with stained wood slat ceiling, mirror with sconces, vanity made from stock oak cabinets

The ceiling was originally covered in 1 x 4’s and polystyrene tiles, just like the rest of the house.

bathroom ceiling covered in acoustic polystyrene (styrofoam) tiles, probably added in the 1970s

Once the tiles and 1 x 4’s were removed, it made the old drywall crumble, so I had to re-drywall the ceiling.  Then I decided to add a wood slat design to the ceiling using strips of stained 1/4-inch plywood.

DIY stained wood slat ceiling made from thin plywood cut into strips

I was afraid that the dark ceiling might make the room look dark, or make the ceiling look really low, but it doesn’t.  In fact, it had the opposite effect.  The ceiling in this room feels so much higher to me than the rooms with just white drywall.

The bathtub originally had this storage cabinet that someone built just above the tile surround.  I didn’t find it very functional at all because it was so deep that reaching the back of the cabinet and actually utilizing all of that space was impossible.

original tiled bathtub surround above cast iron bathtub in late 1940s / early 1950s bathroom, with storage above, probably added in the 1970s

Plus, it was like showering in a cave.  Now the tub area feels so spacious.

remodeled bathroom - old storage closet was replaced with lower cabinet and open storage shelves above

bathtub area before and after remodel

The main shower curtain is purely decorative.  In fact, this time I made the panels stationery and hung them with Velcro, so they can’t close.  The actual usable shower curtain is tucked in behind the front shower curtain panel.

original late 1940s / early 1950s 4 x 4 square tile on bathtub surround replaced with white subway tile

And since I use the breathable fabric hotel liners (not plastic), it dries perfectly fine being tucked in behind there.  I’ve never even once had a problem with mold or mildew on these liners, even though I always keep my shower curtains open.  I don’t like closed shower curtains.  Not only do they make bathrooms feel tiny, but in this case, a closed shower curtain would hide the paneled bathtub skirt.

DIY wood paneled bathtub skirt for a standard bathtub

The original storage closet was behind the bathroom door.  It actually provided quite a bit of usable storage space.

original linen closet in a late 1940s / early 1950s bathroom

But as I was rebuilding the bathroom, I decided I wanted something a little different.  The closed-in closet made the bathroom feel really small, so I opted for a closed cabinet on bottom with open shelving on top.

bathroom remodel before and after - linen closet replaced with open shelving

The double doors may be my favorite part of this bathroom remodel.  The original door opened up into the bathroom, which was another thing that made this bathroom feel so tiny and cramped.

late 1940s / early 1950s bathroom before remodel - linen closet hidden behind bathroom door

Since it’s just a standard 32-inch wide doorway, and double doors for that size would have been a custom order (read: expensive), I ended up .  I also moved the whole doorway over about 10 inches to make room for a larger vanity.

remodeled bathroom - original linen closet replaced with a lower cabinet with open shelves above, bifold closet doors used as double doors

before and after bathroom remodel - linen closet replaced with open shelves

The whole room just feels so much bigger to me now, even though it’s still the same 8′ x 8′ space.

bathroom before remodel - original late 1940s / early 1950s tiled walls and mosaic tile floor

remodeled bathroom with DIY vanity made from stock oak cabinets, mosaic accent tiled backsplash, and mirror with sconces

I actually really did like the style of the original floor, and was kind of sad to see it go.  But the whole reason I started this remodel was because the 1/2-inch lip of tile going from the hallway into the bathroom made this room inaccessible to Matt.  So the vintage tile had to go.  (Plus, that flesh-colored tile really wasn’t my thing.  Had it been white and black, that would have been hard to tear up.)

original pink and white mosaic tile floor in late 1940s / early 1950s bathroom

I love the new 6″ x 24″ tile that I used.  It has a marble effect, and looks so light and bright.  But best of all, it is now perfectly level with the hardwood floor in the hallway, so Matt can easily access this room.  I originally used Alabaster grout on the floor, and it ended up looking dirty and dingy.  So I went back over it with Grout Renew in Bright White, and it made SUCH a huge difference!  Now it looks bright and clean, and it made the grout lines kind of disappear, allowing the tile to be the focus.  Before, with the Alabaster grout, the grout lines kind of jumped out at you, stealing attention from the tile.

And that’s pretty much it!  Here are a few more pictures…

So now to the big question.  How much did this remodel cost?  68.  And that includes the 00 that I paid my plumber and my neighbor.  I did get some things free, though, like the sink, faucet, tub faucet, and drawer/door pulls.  I think that’s it, so if you add the cost of those things, I’m looking at a 00 remodel.

That’s not too bad, right?  Considering that this was a down-to-the-studs (and ceiling joists, and floor joists) remodel, and everything in here is new, I don’t think that’s bad at all!  A temporary, lipstick-on-a-pig makeover that I had originally planned to do would have been considerably cheaper, but it would have been temporary.  So I’m much happier that I went this route.

Ripple Ice Fiber
Ripple Ice Fiber: This is a very interesting new flash fiber that has a really cool crinkle to it - it can be tied in as a highlight, or as a wing, and it has enough stiffness so that it can be used to help create the silouette of the fly. This would be real nice blended with bucktail or other fibers to make deceivers, hollow fleyes, synthetic hair baitfish, and big predator style streamers. Fly Tier Mike Schmidt has published a real nice video of his. You'd need a large quantity to tie the kind of fly that Mike has done in this video, but it's worth a look to see what this fiber can do (click "back" to return to Saltwaterflies.com after watching!) : We are now offering both Deer Belly and Deer Body Hair. Both of these Deer Hair styles are used to make spun deer hair flies like, backcountry flies, crab women flies, muddler style heads, etc. Deer Belly is dyed over white hair from the belly area of the Whitetail Deer - because the various colors of this hair are dyed over white, the colors are more vibrant than Body hair. Deer Body hair (see next table below) is dyed over the natural brown body hair of the deer, so the colors are more muted, with some natural dark mottling to the hair, especially at the tips. Deer Belly Hair is more hollow than Deer Body Hair, which gives it greater bouyancy, and allows it to spin more easily, but the hairs typically have some curvature, and are shorter than Deer Body Hair. 4.25/ea

faux bucktail tan color

Faux Bucktail

Flymen Faux Bucktail: Flymen Fishing Company's "Faux Bucktail" is a new synthetic designed to emulate some of the characteristics of natural bucktail. These fibers feature tapered tips that are slightly staggered, similar to natural bucktail. It should be noted that Faux Bucktail is not a hollow fiber - we don't think it's likely that this will ever replace natural bucktail, as these fibers will not flare like natural bucktail during the tying process - good for some things, maybe not an ideal choice for others. This is a very tough synthetic hair - similar to Fishair - we would probably use this for some types of clouser minnows, popper tails, even some small epoxies. Tan color shown above... click for photos of the, and to see the. -- 6.99/pk

: Considered by many tiers to be the "original" synthetic hair for tying saltwater flies. Though not as popular as it once was, this tough, durable fiber is still useful for many inshore and offshore streamer flies. Fishair is a generally a "straight" fiber with occasonially some slight wave to it, in contrast to many of the other "kinky" fibers like Super Hair, Unique Hair, Slinkyfiber, etc. This is the 70 denier (refers to the thickness), 6" length material - each pack contains a generous quantity. Nice intense colors - color names and numbers are the manufacturer's designations...the numbers that include a "B" feature a "bright, lustrous finish" according to the maker - these colors have a slight sheen to them. : Prepackaged strung saddle hackles are standard fare for seaducers, snake flies,, and, etc. If you need feathers mainly for Deceiver tails, please consider one of the "Whiting American Rooster Capes" - these are far more useful for Deceivers than strung saddle hackle. It has been our experience that the best strung saddle hackles are selected by the supply houses for dying to the various colors, leaving the rest of the hackles to be sold as "White". Even though "White is the most popular color by far, the typical package of white saddle hackle may contain fewer usable feathers than a pack of one of the dyed colors. If you need White saddle hackle, please consider the "Bulk Pack 1OZ" which contains a full ounce of hackle - this typically has better quality feathers than the loose packs also, and we try to pick the very best hackles for the full price 1 oz packs. We also offer 1 oz pks of "Grade 2" hackles - these are the same hackles that we request from our supplier as top grade, but not all the packs we receive are up to our standards for full ounce packs at full price. These are a bargain if you need shorter hackles, hackle for winding or palmering, or ones for squid flies, etc where the overall quality of the hackle is less of a concern. Click the product header link above to view a photo of the "Regular" size Packs. "Natural Brown" and "Natural Ginger" are natural color hackles - not dyed - the Nat. Brown is a darker feather that often has a bronze center, and the Nat. Ginger is a nice natural tan color - great for hackling some bonefish flies, and we have always loved these colors to hackle our wooly buggers too.

Just to clarify a general point; Saddles feature relatively long, thin feathers that vary somewhat in length and shape, and Necks feature moderate length feathers with a very consistent shape.

Whiting American Rooster Capes: Getting hackles to make Lefty's deceiver tails and tarpon flies seems to get harder each year, and these American Rooster Capes are one of the best choices for that style of fly! With a very high feather count, stiff stems, and good web, the Whiting American Rooster cape is one of the best Capes ever for deceiver Tails - you'll never buy strung saddle hackle for deceiver tails again. Feathers in the Grizzly and Dyed Grizzly colors are a bit wider at the end than the White color.
The Grizzly capes are probably some of the best hackle we've ever seen for keys style tarpon flies. Since each cape also has a small quantity of smaller size feathers, these are also great for backcountry flies, bonefish flies, and much more. Grizzly patterning is a nice "mottled" grizzly - not as strong barring as some feathers, excellent for making truly buggy looking flies. Don't miss out on these if you tie Largemouth Bass flies, either!
All of the Capes have some curvature to the feathers... Keep in mind that the "Natural White" is just that - these are not bleached (bleaching can degrade the quality of the feathers), so they really are more of a "Cream" color, with occasional speckles or brown markings, but these Capes still remain our top choice for deceivers. Note: All of these Whiting American Rooster Capes are available in limited quantity - we buy as many as we can each year, but we never get as many as we request. All of the Whiting Rooster Capes have been in short supply for several years, especially the Natural White and the Grizzly colors.

Whiting Bugger Packs:

whiting bugger packs

Whiting Bugger Packs feature longer hackles that can be useful for accents on larger flies like big decievers, hollow fleyes, squid flies, offshore flies etc. Although we don't typically use a full set of these for a deceiver tail, adding a pair or two of these feathers can help add length and color to a variety of larger flies.
Note that since Whiting typically puts these in a packages that is shorter than the feathers themselves, they may need a bit of steaming or soaking to straighten them before use. Pictured in the photo above are the "Grizzly Dyed Green Chartreuse", "Grizzly", and "Grizzly Dyed Orange" colors.
