3 Cool Eyeliner Ideas to Steal From the Runway
It’s a safe bet that most of us know our way around a bold lipstick at this point—toss a matte red, deep burgundy or bright orange our way and we won’t flinch. Something we may be less skilled at achieving? A statement-making eye, which were a focal point across several Fall 2015 runways.
We’re not talking about a little extra mascara, either: we’re talking about seriously cool new eyeliner ideas that not only feel fresh, but convey the message that you’re not effing around when it comes beauty this fall.
Here, we talked to some of the best makeup artists in the business to find out their favorite bold liner looks from the runway, and got their tips for making them work on this side of the catwalk.
Rag & Bone (Photo: Imaxtree)
—known for her work withChrissy Teigen,Lily Collins,Jessica Chastainand other A-listers—loved the look at Rag & Bone this season.
“I think the shape is cool, graphic, modern and very wearable,” she said, adding that it’s the bluntness of rue lines that made it work for the runway but it’s simple to translate IRL. Stiles suggests swapping out black for grey or navy: a softer color will allow you to maintain the shape. A metallic grey will reflect light and soften the vibe of the look but still give you that cool edge. Use shadow instead of liner: by using a shadow versus a liner the edges will be softer and easier to apply. Just be sure to use the right brush so you can really control the shadow.
Fendi (Photo: Imaxtree)
Makeup artist on the other hand (Kate Bosworth,Jessica Alba, andOlivia Palermoare just a few of his clients), loved the graphic eye seen at Fendi.
“I love this runway look because you’re using eyeliner in cross hatching to create what could be eyeshadow,” he said. To replicate this as a wearable look, Martin suggests using Diorshow’s Pro Liner in Pro Black and cross hatch starting in the middle of the lid and work your way out. Use your lash line as a guide to see how far you want to take it.
Step away from your mirror to see the perspective, which will give you the idea of how much more you need to do and how intense it may appear up close. For a more intense look, use Dior’s liquid liner, Art Pen. “The finished effect should look like a bold and interesting shape, but up close, you see the cross hatching detail for the wow factor!” Martin said.

Makeup artistMally Roncal name-checked the shimmery metallic eye makeup used by several designers as a look she’s loving for fall—and her tip couldn’t be easier. “There were a lot of metallic eye looks on the runway during Fashion Week.
